MECHANICAL AND MARINE ENGINEERING - MMC

Overview

Mechanical Engineering can be defined as that branch of engineering which is involved with the design, manufacture and operation of manufactured articles that represent mechanical movement. It is therefore a broad-based discipline applied in almost all branches of engineering. Marine Technology builds on the foundation of mechanical engineering. For a Marine engineer to manage the ship\'s technical aspect his knowledge of Mechanical Engineering becomes essential.

Mechanical Marine Engineers are responsible for selecting the ships\' machinery, which may include diesel engines, steam turbines, gas turbines; and for the design of mechanical, electrical, fluid and control systems throughout the vessel. They may be called as the “marine technicians”.

If you are the kind of person who would like a career exploring new ways to design, build and operate the next generation of marine transport and propulsion systems, offshore drilling rigs and sub-sea exploration vehicles then this field is a good option. These activities are examples of the sort of things in which marine engineers routinely play leading roles, often as part of multidisciplinary teams that include naval architects, electrical engineers, marine scientists, technologists, computer and IT specialists. This discipline is designed to prepare students to be a professional engineer together with a suitable range of transferable and management skills required in this challenging filed.

Career Prospects

Immense job opportunities are awaiting Mechanical Marine engineers and they have nearly 100% placement rates. The demand for Marine Engineers in public and private shipping companies has risen sharply, with the increase in international global sea traffic.

Mechanical and Marine Engineers are employed to support both sales and marketing, technical design roles, along with technical, managerial and commercial leadership. Positions in both small and large companies require both a good technical understanding and strong interpersonal skills. Mechanical and Marine Engineering is widely recognized by employers as a good general purpose degree meeting these requirements. This also enables graduates to be employed by consultancies, government bodies and public utilities.

Further studies for mechanical marine engineers can be pursued in the following fields:

a)      Oceanography.

b)      Postgraduate and PhD programs in maritime, mechanical fields.

c)      Research and development in oceanography and nautical sciences.

d)     Naval engineering.

e)      Naval architecture.
