CERAMIC TECHNOLOGY - CER

Overview
An emerging branch of Engineering/Technology, Ceramic Technology basically deals with the study of applications of ceramic materials, their properties and design. It generally deals with the technology of the manufacturing and usage of ceramic materials. It is the science and technology of creating objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials by the action of heat. An individual who is enthralled by delicate chinaware, the exquisite designs on porcelain, with a flair for artistic expression and an interest in ceramics, then ceramic technology may be apt. For those who are diligently hard working, and believe in seeing their designs come alive, the ceramic industry may be the right option.

The special character of ceramic materials gives rise to many engineering applications and ceramics have attracted the attention of engineers in electrical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. Ceramic technology is being applied in a wide range of industries like medical technology, nuclear technology, and electronics, including mining, refinery, and food industry, the chemical industry, packaging science, industrial electricity and transmission electricity; it is used in aerospace as well.

The subject is dealt with the research, development and design of materials and products. They specialize in specific product lines like glassware, pottery, electronic equipment, refractory materials, cutting tools, computer memory packages, high temperature tile insulation and composite materials in space technology, nuclear fuel roads, fibre optics, plumbing fixtures etc.

The growth of ceramic industry in India during the past fifty years is creditable. One may find vast opportunities both in private and public sector.  The job of a ceramic engineer centers on research, product development and ceramic engineering companies, in telecommunication, nuclear energy ancillaries, electronic, medicine and refractory and cement industries etc. They are mostly involved in Research, Design, Production, and Testing. One also stands a chance to  start his/her own business and become an entrepreneur.

Career Prospects
Ceramic engineers are involved in: Research: Ceramic technologists use their scientific knowledge to anticipate new applications to replace existing products. This involves the study and application of chemical and thermal interactions of oxides, which make ceramics.
Design: Ceramic designers combine their artistic talent with research. A major challenge for designers lies in reducing product cost and making it convenient to use. A good aesthetic sense is a must. They work in industries manufacturing tableware, light fittings, pottery, etc.
Production: Ceramics technologists generally specialize in the technological developments of specific production processes. They may specialize in glass for working in industries engaged in manufacture of fiber optics, bulbs, etc. Specialists in structural clay work in the manufacture of enameled articles and pipes, engine parts, artificial limbs or cement used in construction, etc. Manufacturing integrated circuits, a sensor etc. for the electronics sector is another good specialization.
Testing: The samples prepared are tested for colour, surface finish, texture, strength, uniformity, quality of raw material and the correctness of the manufacturing process by engineers.
Sales: Ceramics engineers also work in sales for understanding customer needs for projecting these requirements to guide further research.

Salary

Remunerations may vary with educational qualifications and job experience of the ceramic engineer, and the kind of job. A fresh graduate can earn anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 40,000 per month.
